Happy Wednesday! Today was an exciting day!
Ask your child about today's kindness story of the day! What was it about?
As part of the Kindergarten "Citizenship and Identity" curriculum, it is important for students to have an awareness of what community is, and to have an understanding of the different roles and responsibilities various members of a community may have. Today we invited Constable Gemma from the Calgary Police Service to come in and talk to all classes about her role as a police officer! She shared lots of important information with us.
Students learned how to identify a police officer. Even though all police officers can look different, we know a person is a police officer by what clothes they are wearing (we learned this is called a uniform) and the badges they carry with them. We learned about the different kinds of tools police officers use to do their job, and we also learned that some of her tools have very important rules. If a police officer doesn't use their tools safely or how they are supposed to be used, they can get in a lot of trouble - just like we can get in trouble at school for not using our tools safely (pencils, scissors, etc)! Students were very curious about her gun/taser. Constable Gemma told us that police officers carry these things to have "just in case", but that they are very rarely used. She has been an officer for 10 years and has never had to use them! Ask your child what other tools Constable Gemma carries with her (pens, paper, cellphone, radio, badge, handcuffs, etc).
Constable Gemma explained to us that her MOST important tools (and OUR most important tools) are the tools people are born with! Ask your child what our most important tools are and how they help us (HINT: the five senses).
We also learned about and saw pictures of the different forms of transportation police officers use - like cars, helicopters, motorcycles, push-bikes, and even horses! We talked about the phone number 9-1-1. Who does it call? We talked about the difference between small problems and big emergencies, and that 9-1-1 would only be called during a big emergency. There is usually an adult around during big emergencies who can call 9-1-1 for us. Afterwards we got to ask Constable Gemma our questions!
Miss Aebli's AM group had music and their last day of Mission Impossible today! Mrs. G's AM group had centre time. The PM group also had gym! Some older students buddied up with both the Kinder classes to help them through each Mission Impossible station.
REMINDERS:
Friday is an AM day.
No School February 13th, 14th, or 17th for Teachers Convention and Family Day!
