What a busy day!
Miss Aebli's AM class and Mrs. G's PM class had their "Winter Wonders" Workshop today! There were 4 stations to explore and learn from!
1. We learned about Canadian birds and got to listen to their unique sounds! Students learned about what birds eat in the colder months and then got to make their own bird feeder to take home.
2. We learned about Canadian animals and how they adjust to the cold. Some animals hibernate, some migrate, while others adapt! They learned what animals hibernate and where (mud, underground burrows, caves, trees, etc).
3. We took a close look at snowflakes and learned how they are formed. Dust particles attach with water vapour in the air, and then the water freezes because of the cold temperatures! The ice crystals form a hexagon shape. Ask how many sides a hexagon has. The hexagon then develops 6 arm like shapes. We learned that ALL snowflakes have 6 points/arms. Then students got to make their own!
4. We became "meteorologists" and learned how clouds are formed. Then we explored different kinds of snow/ice that can fall from clouds. Students looked at models of water vapour, snow, and snow pellets, hail, and compared how they "fell from the sky". Some didn't make any sound and fell softly while some made sounds because they were heavier and hit the ground harder.
Mrs G's AM class continued talking about symmetry! They also talked about shapes and the shapes we find on our faces. Students used a pipe cleaner and mirrors to locate the "line of symmetry" on their own face.
